DONE…over perfect

Done over perfect. This little phrase helps to bridge the gap between what’s ideal and what is reality. If you’re someone that struggles with an all or nothing mentality, implementing ‘done over perfect’ can be a game changer.

Often we set big goals at the beginning of the year for our fitness and nutrition, whether it be to lose 10 pounds, start a new exercise habit, or improve the quality of what we are putting in our bodies. Inevitably life hits. A busy week, packed with kids that are sick, extra work obligations, and running from sunup until well past sundown. You might reach the end of the day exhausted and feeling defeated that yet again you went through the drive through for fast food or missed another day of going for a walk or any kind of intentional physical activity.

Do you get back on the train, or do you throw up your hands and say ‘this just isn’t working’ or ‘I’m not cut out for this’ or ‘it’s just a season’ (knowing full well life isn’t going to slow down and magically open up time for you to workout and eat healthier)?

Enter ‘done over perfect’. Eat one balanced meal today. Protein, healthy fats, carbs, and veggies. Done over perfect. So you didn’t meal prep for 4 hours on Sunday to have every ounce of food weighed out, that’s ok. Eat a balanced lunch. Done over perfect. You missed your walk today and now it’s dark and you’re tired. Turn on a 10 min stretching video to wind down before bed. Done over perfect.

You made it to the gym but your kids and phone interrupted you multiple times and you only did half of what you had planned before jumping in your car still sweating without a proper cool down. Celebrate your ‘done over perfect’.

You ran into the grocery store to grab pre made dinner for the family, but it wasn’t fast food. It was healthiER. Done over perfect.

It’s not settling and it’s not giving up. It’s deciding to keep moving forward even if it’s an inch instead of the mile that you planned. It’s knowing that even one step forward, over weeks, months, and years will still get you there. It’s not about being perfect. Perfect doesn’t exist. Circumstances may not change and they may often oppose your progress. But what can you get ‘done’ today without worrying about the ‘perfect’?
