Should I take GLP-1 Medications? A Fitness Coach’s Perspective.

If you've been trying to lose weight, you've probably wondered:

"Should I take a GLP-1 medication?" Are GLP-1’s worth it? What are the pros and cons of GLP-1’s?

Whether you're hearing about Ozempic, Wegovy, Zepbound, or other medications, it's one of the biggest conversations happening in health and fitness right now.

As a fitness and nutrition coach, I don't believe the answer is always yes, or always no.

I believe the better question is:

"Will this tool help me build a healthier life long term?"

What Are GLP-1 Medications?

GLP-1 medications work by helping regulate appetite, slowing stomach emptying, and improving blood sugar control. Many people naturally eat less because they feel fuller for longer.

For some individuals, these medications have been life-changing.

They can improve blood sugar, reduce the risk of complications from obesity, and help people who have struggled with weight for years finally make meaningful progress.

They're a Tool—Not a Magic Fix

One of the biggest misconceptions is that the medication does all the work.

The medication may reduce hunger.

It doesn't build muscle.

It doesn't improve your cardiovascular fitness.

It doesn't strengthen your bones.

It doesn't teach healthy eating habits.

It doesn't automatically improve sleep, stress, or movement.

Those are still your responsibility.

Muscle Matters More Than Most People Realize

One concern with rapid weight loss is that people often lose muscle along with body fat.

Muscle is one of the best predictors of healthy aging. It supports your metabolism, protects your joints, improves balance, and helps you stay independent as you get older.

If someone chooses to take a GLP-1 medication, I strongly encourage them to prioritize:

  • Strength training 2-4 days each week

  • Eating plenty of protein (80% of bodyweight in grams of protein)

  • Staying physically active (10k steps a day)

  • Getting adequate sleep (8 hours quality sleep)

  • Following up with their healthcare provider regularly (bloodwork and labs)

The goal shouldn't simply be to lose weight.

The goal should be to lose fat while preserving as much muscle as possible.

Who Might Benefit?

Every situation is different, but GLP-1 medications may be worth discussing with your healthcare provider if you have:

  • Obesity or significant excess body fat

  • Type 2 diabetes or prediabetes

  • Weight-related medical conditions

  • A long history of unsuccessful weight-loss attempts despite consistent lifestyle changes

These medications are medical treatments, not shortcuts.

Who Might Want to Think Carefully?

If you're looking to lose 10 or 15 pounds before vacation, this may not be the right answer.

Many people can achieve their goals through:

  • Strength training

  • Better nutrition

  • Consistent movement

  • Improved sleep

  • Stress management

  • Building sustainable habits

Those lifestyle changes also provide benefits that medication alone cannot.

My Approach as a Coach

If you're taking a GLP-1 medication, I'll meet you where you are.

My job isn't to judge your decision.

My job is to help you maximize your health by building the habits that will serve you for years to come.

Whether you're taking medication or not, I want you to become stronger, move better, eat enough protein, preserve muscle, and build a lifestyle that's sustainable.

Because the healthiest version of you isn't defined by the number on the scale, it's defined by how well your body supports the life you want to live.

If you're wondering whether a GLP-1 medication is right for you, have an honest conversation with your healthcare provider. Then, regardless of the path you choose, commit to the daily habits that create lasting health.
